The History of Southern Foods

A southern food is very familiar in the entire world. Even in United Sates, southern food is one of the most fascinating menus.

Where did southern cooking came from and how did it originate in the United States? Why it is very famous in United States? Here is some of the vital information regarding the history of southern cooking.

Based on the national history, the southern way of cooking began when the Spanish and English explorers began to navigate the United States area.

The states located in southern area like Florida, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia and some southern islands.

The explorers brought food in that particular area. At the same time, the explorers also discovered new way of preparing and cooking their foods.

Some of the Europeans, Africans, Native Americans and expatriate from other continents, all had a hand in beginning the southern way of cooking.

When the Spanish explorers brought pork in the United States, it was paired up with corn as a main ingredient. On the other hand, the Indians added other ingredients and spices to make the meat tastier. Most of these ingredients are beans, black-eyed peas, onions, nuts, berries, green peas, and other kind of seasonings.

The new land discovered by the explorer was considered as the wild game for the new discovered foods. By the time the immigrants arrived in United States, they introduced a new lifestyle. They also introduced a new breed of livestock. They began planting wheat, yams, cabbages, okra, potatoes, oats, tomatoes, rice, oranges, tea, chocolate and melons.

According also to some historical beliefs, the slavery method and food shortage were one of the factors that influenced the development of southern way of cooking. During that time, more of the African slaves that cooked and served foods are the primary creator of southern foods.

The southern way of cooking was transformed primarily because of the generations that passed. As the time goes by, the dishes were refined to a more southern hospitality and style.

Poverty from the great depression and the effect of the civil war caused many of the southern civilians to experience hunger and food scarcity. The endurance of everyoneˇ¦s health depends on the inventive talents of hunters, anglers, gardeners and most of all cooks.

Southern foods became more popular from the first generation of New Orleans immigrants. Those said immigrants coming from Spain, France, and Africa continue to patronize the southern way of cooking.

Thomas Jefferson indeed affects the southern cooking. He was the former governor of Virginia and at the same time public minister to France. He was one of the instruments in creating the importance of food in southern culture and in the land of America.

When Jefferson was the minister of France in the year 1780, he navigated Europe and other countries to explore new foods. Most of the unique kind of foods he brought back to U.S. was pasta from Italy, waffle from Holland, wines from France, olive oil, and vanilla extracts.

Aside from those, Jefferson also introduced the recipes for meringues and for ice cream. He also put up his own vegetable garden. According to him the best way to have an abundant supply of foods can came from own house.

Southern foods and the southern style of cooking have a brilliant and colorful history. Understanding its history can help in defining the development of southern cooking.
